A Villanelle by Beverly Stock.
In aisle 29, I got a notion
Intestinal distress? Just a trace
A small wave in a very large ocean.
Just as I passed the jars of hand lotion
I knew that I might need to replace
In aisle 29 I got a notion.
In aisle 15 my mind felt the motion
My lower tract was starting to race
A small wave in a very large ocean
Adult disposables! A solution?
In aisle 9, thought I'd buy a case
In aisle 29, I got a notion.
Restrooms Closed? Panic! Emotion!
Will I ever slow down this pace?
A small wave in a very large ocean.
Pepto Bismol® was the potion
To stop this motion and the chase
In aisle 29 I got a notion
A small wave in a very large ocean.
This poem is a Villanelle, a nineteen line poetic form consisting of five tercets followed by a quatrain. There are two refrains and two repeating rhymes, with the first and third line of the first tercet repeated alternately at the end of each subsequent stanza. The magic of the poetic form!
